There are four main stainless steel families, and these include austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, and duplex. Each of these stainless steel families has its own unique characteristics.

Martensitic: This is a steel that contains 11-14% chromium, but it does not contain nickel or other corrosion-resistant elements. It is hardenable by heat treatment and is characterized in the AISI 400 series.

Ferritic: This is a stainless steel that contains chromium and other corrosion-resistant elements, but it does not contain nickel or other elements. It is a very common stainless steel that is characterized in the AISI 410 series and is commonly used for applications that require moderate corrosion resistance.

Duplex: This is a stainless steel that contains 11-14% chromium, a little less than the martensitic and ferritic grades, but it does not contain nickel or other materials. It is a very durable and versatile stainless steel that is often used in decorative applications.

Galvanic Corrosion: This is a very common type of corrosion that occurs when two metals come into contact with each other and an electrolyte (usually salt water). It can occur very quickly, especially in harsh environments like marine.

SCC: This is a common failure mode in stainless steels, and it typically occurs when there is too much stress or the environment is aggressive. Stainless steels that fail by SCC have cracks that form from pit initiation sites and propagate through the material in either a transgranular or intergranular mode.

This type of corrosion can cause unsightly and hazardous defects. It can even lead to catastrophic failure, and it is important to address this issue early on.

SS304: This is the most widely produced grade of stainless steel and is generally used in a variety of applications. It is an austenitic steel that resists ordinary corrosion in architecture, withstands most acids and has good corrosion resistance in typical food processing environments.

Stainless steel is commonly used in the automotive, aerospace, and oil and gas industries, as well as in medical technology. It is a good choice for these industries because it is rust-resistant and does not react with most cleaning solutions. It is easy to clean and sterilize, which makes it ideal for use in medical devices. It is also a sustainable material, as it does not leach toxic chemicals into the environment during recycling.
